Are you living a toxin free lifestyle? Sometimes we don’t even realize what products in our house may contain toxins. You may be surprised to know that the average household contains 62 toxins. Everyday cleaners found on the shelves of grocery stores are full of petrochemicals that are hazardous to our health. When you clean with them, they get into the air and are then circulated through the vents which can continue to release the fumes.  For example, the cleaner you use for your kitchen counters not only releases into the air but also leaves a reside on the surface even after wiping it up. After its clean, this is an area where food is prepared and then eaten, therefore part of the residue of our cleaners can then be consumed through our food.

When we as consumers buy commercial cleaning products, we expect them to do their job. We use a wide array of soaps, detergents, bleaching agents, softeners, polishes, and specialized cleaners for bathrooms, glass, drains, and ovens to keep our homes sparkling clean and smelling lovely! While these products may do a great job at visibly cleaning our homes, most of them are considered poisonous when ingested and can be harmful when inhaled or touched.

And that smell you may love so much, what’s its source?! Fragrances are added to many cleaners and can cause an array of health issues. The national institute of occupational safety and health has found that one-third of the substances used in the fragrance industry are toxic. But, because the chemical formulas of fragrances are considered trade secrets, companies are not required to to list their ingredients but can simply label them “fragrance”.

Here is a list of common toxic chemicals found in the most popular cleaning products: phthalates, triclosan, ammonium compounds, ammonia, chlorine, fragrance, and sodium hydroxide. The potential side effects of these ingredients can range from skin irritations, burns, respiratory issues, headaches and many other long term health problems.  We encourage you to do some inventory and research on the products in your home and take advantage of the plant-based products young living offers. We love that Young Living uses plant based ingredients we can trust!3697
